When Might Ear Syringing Be Suitable?
Ear syringing may be considered if:
- Wax is soft (often after using olive oil drops)
- There is a mild blockage
- You are suitable for water-based removal
Before any treatment, we always check your ears to ensure it’s safe and appropriate.
When Syringing May NOT Be Recommended
Ear syringing is not suitable for everyone.
We may advise an alternative (such as microsuction) if you:
- Have had ear infections
- Have a perforated eardrum
- Experience dizziness
- Have sensitive ears
Your safety always comes first — we’ll guide you honestly.

Ear Syringing vs Microsuction
While ear syringing can be effective, many patients now prefer microsuction. If you’d like a simple explanation, read our guide on microsuction vs ear syringing.
At Bushmead Pharmacy in Luton, we no longer offer ear syringing.
This is because more modern methods like microsuction are now considered safer, more precise, and more comfortable for patients.
Microsuction:
- Does not use water
- Is more precise
- Is often more comfortable
If syringing isn’t suitable, we’ll explain your options clearly.

Before Your Appointment
Before your appointment, please use olive oil ear drops or spray for 3–5 days to help soften the wax.
Apply 3–4 drops or sprays into the affected ear(s), 3–4 times a day. After applying, tilt your head to the side for a few minutes to help the oil reach and soften the wax.
This helps make microsuction easier, more comfortable, and more effective.
